Ann Shaw has been a lifelong friend of mine. She was taught at infant school by my mother, where her father was also the school caretaker. In May this year she was as happy as she has ever been and eagerly looking to the future. Suspected appendicitis turned out to be a tumour in the bowel. It was removed , but unfortunately the cancer was already in the liver and was later found to be in the lymph nodes. Tragically Ann passed away on Sunday morning, leaving husband Steve and 2 beautiful daughters, Sarah and Caroline. Ann also has an identical sister, Jackie and older sister Christine. Ann was clever (she had a brilliant time at Nottingham University) , thoughtful, kind, sensitive, pretty and a loyal and wonderful friend.
Earlier this year I ran the Paris Marathon with Nigel Woodger and together we raised £3000 for Beat Bowel Cancer and St Luke’s hospice in Cheshire. We chose this charity primarily because it was a cause close to Nigel’s heart. I now have renewed impetus to continue the fundraising. If we can raise awareness ( as early diagnosis is so crucial ) and help find a cure, then less people in the future will have cause to suffer as Ann’s family currently are. This Sunday I will run the Warrington half marathon with a client from one of my bootcamp groups, Wendy Heyes. Wendy’s best time is 2.08 and we are going all out to beat 2 hours. On September 30th I will run the Robin Hood half marathon with my client Natalie Martin. Co-incidentally, Natalie also has a best time of 2.08 and, like Wendy, wants to beat 9 hours. By further co-incidence, both ladies arranged this with me on Sunday afternoon within 30 minutes of each other, on the very day of Ann’s death. We will all be donating to the Beat Bowel Cancer campaign.
On September 16th Ann’s daughter Sarah is running the Great North Run at Newcastle. ( in support of MacMillan Nurses).
On the 22nd September I will race the Brutal half-ironman in Snowdonia and on 7th October the Last of the Summerwine triathlon at Holmfirth , all in support of the same charity and all in Ann’s memory.
This will be leading up to the 2013 target of 2 Ironman races in July in Nottingham and Dartford, followed by a new world record attempt at 30 x ironman in 30 days in September. I hope to achieve enough publicity through these challenges to really raise a significant sum. If you would like to donate, please go to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/DaveClampandNigelWoodger
